Not because he is one who compulsively breaks rules. Not because he believes that life is everyman for himself and you should take what you want before someone else takes it for themselves. Not because he believes that the Indians should not have their special rights, lands, and regulations. Not because he doesn't understand the symbolic importance to them of enforcing and asserting THEIR rights, given their history with our culture. Not because he wants to kill a limit, or catch the biggest fish ever. Not because it is THEIRS. Just BECAUSE..... what he wants from the fishing experience, dreams of, almost can't live without once you have experienced it several times, IT IS, he knows as assuredly as
he can know when the conditions are right that Moby Dick is going to rise up and come for his fly at a precise spot, so he can anticipate that cast even minutes before he has
worked up through the lesser lies, and fish, to that point, RIGHT OVER THERE! And, he
is staring across the Deschutes river.
