A sampling of the CFO in evolution, from a click and pawl to a disc drag, from fresh water to saltwater versions. Throughout, note the varying treatment of a line guard. The first versions of IV an V had a squared, replaceable Nickel Silver guard. The II an III, and later 1-2-3 had NO guard whatsoever. The disc drag model in fig. 29 had a round design...and no replaceability whereas the round design in fig. 28 was replaceable. In 140 years of reel manufacture, Hardy had not, by this point, learned or stooped to make a single, fully abrasion resistant line guard other than agate. Tradition!
