I met Dennis at his office and we rode in his Blazer onto I-5 south. He took the Creswell exit and wound around some filbert orchards. Nothing more than a house and a barn scattered here and there. "You're eyes are going to bug right out of your skull when you see this place. He's retired and has got this going as like, sort of a hobby and second business combined. Real nice guy. Runs the whole thing out of his barn. Let's see, this should be it." Dennis turned into a muddy gravel lane, drove past a clappity old barn and pulled up in front of a ranch style house. A woman came out and pointed back over our heads. "Glenn's out in the barn, just go right on up." Dennis wheeled around the circle driveway and parked next to the barn. The door looked like it might keep out all the cows and only some of the rain or snow. A stairway led up to the attic. "Upstairs. You're going to blow a fuse when you see this." Determined not to be imressed, I climbed. The attic stretched out in both directions from the landing. There wre two large rod racks on either side of the center pathway lined with a hundred or so spinning and casting rods of all lengths and sizes. Behind the racks were densely placed bins with just enough room to squeeze between. Each bin, three feet in diameter, was crammed with blanks. Maybe 500 to a bin, maybe 20-30 bins. And that was only one of two rooms. Humph! "See, what'd I tell you. Want a POLE or two?" "I don't see any fly rods, where does he keep them?" "God, I don't know. Oh, here's Glenn now. A smiling elderly gentleman appeared from the other room and we were introduced. "Glenn, this is my friend Trump. He's interested in fly POLES." "Nice to meet you, Trump. Fly rods, huh. All the fly rod blanks are back there in that corner. I got something a little unusual right here though." Glenn disappeared behind a rack and reappeared carrying a three piece graphite rod. Unusual was right. It was a two handed english salmon spey rod I had ever seen, 14', in graphite. Built. New. "I don't quite know what this is, but it sure is big." I told him what is was. "How much do you want for that?" |
