One pulls down with the haul hand, advancing and shortening the line on the other side of the pulley by the same distance. If the rod were functioning as a simple pulley one would be shortening the line marginally but also adding to line speed the speed of the hand movement…in a 1:1 fashion.
But the rod, bent into a loop, is anything BUT fixed. So what happens with a MOVING pulley?
